| What is ScrControl? | |
| ScrControl is a program which enables or disables your screen saver. It is a command line utility, and can be included in batch (BAT) files or scheduled (using a task scheduler). | |
| Who would use ScrControl? | |
| Anyone who uses the Task Scheduler in
Windows 95 or 98 to perform maintenance on their computer at hours when
they are not at the computer.
Most people have a screen saver set for their system, but screen savers can interfere with the normal operation of many of the system maintenance utilities (such as ScanDisk or Defrag). ScrControl allows you to disable your screen saver before these maintenance utilities are run, then enable it when they are complete. You can also use this from BAT files or the command line (or even a desktop shortcut) whenever you have a task that you do not want interrupted by a screen saver. |
|
| How does ScrControl work? | |
| ScrControl works by setting system
parameters to prevent the screen saver from starting, or by setting
these parameters to allow it to start. It will also close a running
instance of a screen saver, if necessary.
There are two options for ScrControl: Enable and Disable. When you use the Disable option, ScrControl checks to see if a screen saver is currently running. If it is, it closes it (note that this may not work properly for screen savers which are not controlled through the Display applet in Control Panel, and it may not work properly for screen savers which are password protected). Then, it sets the system parameter to prevent the screen saver from starting again. It does *not* change your currently selected screen saver, so it is not necessary to reselect your screen saver after running this utility. When you use the Enable option, ScrControl simply sets the system parameter that allows the screen saver to start. Note that your previously set delay will still be in effect, so your screen saver will not start immediately after being enabled. However, as soon as the time expires, the screen saver will start. |

| Where can I get it, and how much will it cost me? | |
| You can download an evaluation copy of ScrControl
here. Note that the evaluation copy is not
crippled or limited in any way. There are no nag screens or pop-ups
while using the program, nor any limitations on the features you can
access. Simply copy the downloaded EXE file into a folder where you wish
to keep it, and run it from there.
To register your copy or ScrControl (which will entitle you to full technical support), you can find a registration form here, or you can contact us for complete information. Registration is $5.00 US (plus shipping, if a diskette is requested). |
